Prolotherapy is an injection treatment that is used to trigger your body’s natural healing capabilities. It is especially effective in addressing various forms of pain and certain medical conditions. Prolotherapy triggers a cascade of blood and stem cells in that area to jump into action – responding to prolotherapy injections as a threat or fresh injury. Your natural immune response is for healing agents to rush to the area to repair the “injury” the injection has introduced and, in the process, the original damage to the area begins healing. Prolotherapy is used to help people with chronic pain and many medical conditions, including:
Prolotherapy has an excellent track record and has brought results for many of our patients in the Alexandria VA area.
If you’ve tried other treatments that have not given you the results you seek – especially if you have chronic pain related to musculoskeletal conditions - then you are a good candidate for Prolotherapy.
Prolotherapy has an excellent safety profile. However, if you have blood clotting disorders, anemia, or cancer, or if you have skin cancer, open wounds, sores, or irritated skin in the treatment area, Prolotherapy may be contraindicated. Prolotherapy is also not for you if you have allergies to stainless steel or anesthetics, hemostatic (bleeding) dysfunction, are pregnant or nursing, or taking certain medications.

Inflammation is a natural part of your body’s healing processes. When you are injured, your body uses inflammation to increase the flow of growth factors to the affected area. Prolotherapy allows us to “jump-start” this healing process, restarting it in a safe and effective way.
During a prolotherapy session, your provider will inject a solution into your pain site. The injection triggers blood and stem cells in that area to jump into action – responding to prolotherapy injections as a threat or injury. Your natural immune response is to rush to the area to repair what the injection has introduced. In that process, the original damage to the area is repaired.
Most people typically receive a total of one to six injections over the course of treatment – which can take four to six months. Each patient is different, so determining how many injections you need depends on your particular condition and symptoms.
At your first session, you will speak with one of our Prolotherapy specialists to develop a personalized treatment plan and review any concerns or questions you may have. Treatments generally require no more than 30 minutes, but your first session may last longer as we collect your medical information.
Results can vary, but it generally takes 1-6 treatments spaced 30-45 days apart to begin to notice significant see significant, lasting results.
Individual injections can bring relief that lasts several weeks, but Prolotherapy is intended to be a completely natural and permanent treatment because it relies on the body's capacity to heal itself to reduce pain by ameliorating the source of your pain.
Prolotherapy may be uncomfortable at the time of the injection and for a day or so after. Pain levels may vary from patient to patient.
While you may experience some swelling and redness at the injection site, these minimal side effects are only temporary.
There are no specific restrictions, but you should remember that you are trying to foster healing in your body. Healing of ligaments and tendons is a slow process and requires time and patience, but prolotherapy can speed up that process. Most ligaments and tendons that normally require several months to heal can begin to heal in the first few weeks of Prolotherapy treatment.
The first few days after Prolotherapy, a cascade of blood and stem cells has been triggered and are flooding the area. That is why you will sometimes see swelling or tenderness in the first week. Avoid overworking or stressing the area or joint under treatment. Within 10 days, you should be returning to normal and even increased function – but always listen to your pain levels for how far to push your body.
Even though results can often be seen in as few as 1-6 sessions, you are free to continue your sessions as long as you are seeing improvement. Prolotherapy sessions should be spaced 30-45 days apart. A course of treatment normally lasts four to six months.
What would it be like to see increased function again and relieve debilitating chronic pain? Let our team of experts at the Center for Sports & Regenerative Orthopedics help you achieve your wellness goals and help you get a new lease on life!
