Bone Marrow Concentrate Injection Therapy – also referred to as BMC Therapy or BMC Injections - is a regenerative medical procedure where a small amount of bone marrow is aspirated from your hip bone. It is then processed and injected into the area requiring treatment.
Bone marrow is a source of mesenchymal cells (MSCs) as well as growth factors and cytokines that appear to be effective for anti-inflammatory and regenerative effects on various tissues, including cartilage and bone. However, since MSCs make up such a tiny percentage of bone marrow, bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) is used.
It is a promising cutting-edge regenerative therapy that has been studied for use with moderate to severe osteoarthritis, tendon and ligament injuries, and an increasing number of musculoskeletal and especially joint conditions.
BMC Therapy is often used to treat the following conditions:
Bone Marrow Concentrate Injection Therapy has an excellent track record and has brought profound results for many of our patients in the Alexandria VA area.
Basically, BMC Therapy takes regenerative therapy to the next level. While similar to Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) in its ability to harness the body's ability to heal itself through the aid of growth factors, BMC utilizes mesenchymal stromal cells which are contained within bone marrow - unlike PRP which is sourced from blood.
The mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in your bone marrow, which are at times mistakenly referred to as stem cells, can be obtained from the hip bone, processed, then used for treatment.
MSCs are a rich source of growth factors and cytokines, which have a paracrine and immunomodulatory effect. For this reason, BMC Therapy has emerged as a promising biologic tool for regenerative medicine. MSCs are thought to act as signaling cells through their paracrine effect and have been shown to improve symptoms of various musculoskeletal conditions.
The benefits of PRP in the treatment of muscle, bone and cartilage is well established, and now BMC Therapy is generating exceptional results for many of the same purposes.
BMC Therapy seems to work well as a standalone - without the use of PRP – but the addition of PRP to BMC has been shown to have some advantages.
At your first session, you will speak with one of our BMC Therapy specialists to develop a personalized treatment plan and review any concerns or questions you may have.
At your initial consultation, we will take a full medical history and evaluate the other regenerative options you've tried to address your specific musculoskeletal issues.
Our physicians will ask and answer questions and determine together with you if you would be a good candidate for BMC Therapy. If you’ve tried other treatments that have not given you the results you seek, then you probably are a good candidate for Bone Marrow Concentrate Injection Therapy.

During your BMC Therapy session, bone marrow concentrate will be obtained from your hip bone and processed. The injection site for the area requiring treatment will be thoroughly cleaned, then a small needle will be used to inject the aspirated, processed bone marrow concentrate into your treatment area. The process can be repeated if you have multiple conditions we need to treat. But each condition should require only one – at most two – injections to see effects.
Bone Marrow Concentrate Injection Therapy has an excellent safety profile. However, if you have blood clotting disorders, anemia, or cancer, or if you have skin cancer, open wounds, sores or irritated skin in the treatment area, Bone Marrow Concentrate Injection Therapy may be contraindicated. Bone Marrow Concentrate Injection Therapy is also not for you if you have certain allergies (e.g., to stainless steel), hemostatic (bleeding) dysfunction, are pregnant or nursing, or taking certain medications. We will discuss all of your safety concerns at our first session before proceeding with treatment.
The procedure will be conducted on an outpatient basis in our offices and will require between two to three hours. You can return home the same day, but you will not be able to drive so plan to have someone accompany you that can drive you home safely. Your first session may last longer as we collect your medical information.
Results can vary, but most people see a difference within two to six weeks after BMC Therapy – with results ranging from increased strength and stability to decreased pain. Greater improvement is often seen between six weeks and ninety days. Continued sessions can provide greater results.
Individual injections can bring results that last up to two years. But if improvement seems to plateau, a second injection can be considered within a few months if necessary. Your physician can discuss any issues to determine how often to schedule repeat Bone Marrow Concentrate Injection Therapy.
For the first few days, some swelling and discomfort in the injected area is to be expected.
While you may experience some swelling, soreness or redness at the injection site, these effects are only temporary. Within the first week, symptoms usually resolve. Physical therapy is often recommended at that point to optimize recovery. In general, BMC Therapy has minimal side effects.
